Her Words: Writing from
Teen Voices

Our first book, Her Words: Writing from Teen Voices, features poetry, letters, monologues, and short narratives written by the youth in our program in the spring of 2020.

Written when the Covid-19 pandemic hit, the book is a document of a moment in time when we faced new limitations on our freedom, felt a shift in our sense of safety, and reimagined what it means to be alive and look toward the future.

Raising Voices: Creating a Safe Space for Girls to Speak Out

Her Words was established in 2005 by teaching artists Paula Davidoff and Carolyn Hunt. Formerly called Girls Surviving, the program was started to help teen girls “collaborate to make art and, in the process, strengthen their autonomy and sense of self.” Davidoff and Hunt’s book, Raising Voices: Creating a Safe Space for Girls to Speak Out, describes how they built the program and helps readers learn how to implement a similar one for girls in their communities.
